Troop 482 Hosts 2011 Buffalo Creek Half Marathon Water Station

On Saturday October 15th, Troop 482 hosted a water station at the 5 Mile Marker for the 2011 Buffalo Creek Half Marathon. This was our third year volunteering at this event. There were over 800 runners registered this year. It was a great time, and a good opportunity to earn a few service hours! After the half marathon the boys took a nice bike ride on the trail and enjoyed the fall colors. Below are a few photos of the  event, along with a link to the full Webshots photo gallery.

Troop 482 Participates in Fall Camporee at Camp Bucoco!

Troop 482 Participated in a Fall Camporee this past weekend at Camp Bucoco. Our boys had a great time participating and competing in such events as the Iron Man Competition where we took third place! We also placed in the camp wide scavenger hunt and took home some nice prizes! Our troop held a dinner and Court of Honor Ceremony Saturday evening at camp to recognize our scouts who have earned merit badges and who have also moved up in rank! It was a nice time with great food and fellowship. Troop 482 now boasts 5 Scouts who have earned the rank of Life Scout and are on their way to becoming Eagle Scouts! Congratulations Scouts!

Troop 482 Summer Resident Camp Recap

Troop 482 has just completed another great week of Resident Camp at Camp Bucoco for 2011! Although the weather conditions were extreme with temperatures in the 90's, high humidity and a few downpours, our scouts came through the week in fine fashion. Lots of Merit Badges earned as well as numerous recognitions for achievements went to the scouts and leaders of Troop 482.

Troop 482 had two entries in the Dutch Oven Cook-Off. The boys entered a delicious Chicken Stew which earned them the "Vanilla Award"! The award is amusing since it calls the dish "Kids & Chicken Stew"! Don't worry we brought all the boys home with us! None of them went into the stew.
The Leaders entry was Mrs. Bell's famous Beef Short Ribs and Mashed Potatoes. Once again the award is amusing since it reads " Beed Short Ribs and Mashed Potatoes". I can vouch for the fact that they were DELICIOUS! I didn't find any "beeds" in mine...
Speaking of eating, who can forget HAPPY SONG TIME? Our troop had a couple of guest leaders after lunch on Friday for "The Badger Song"! "Standing?...YES, STANDING!!!"
Some of the boys cooled off at the "Water Carnival" Friday afternoon. One of the activities was called "Dizzy Bat" which consisted of the participants spinning around ten times on a bat while being sprayed with a hose. They then had to run about 20 yards to a marker while trying to stand up!

Here is a link to a photo gallery of all of the photos that I took during the week:

Camp Agawam Arrow of Light Weekend

Boy Scout Troop 482 Camped along with Cub Scout Pack 482 during their Arrow of Light Weekend 5-20 thru 5-22 2011 at Camp Agawam located along Slippery Rock Creek in Lawrence County, PA. This turned out to be a great weekend with beautiful weather and memorable events. Saturday morning the Troop and Pack worked on service projects for the camp. Troop 482 stained the exterior siding of a new latrine while Pack 482 cleared and cleaned up some of the camp's hiking trails.

Saturday afternoon the boys enjoyed fishing in the lake, hiking, and a game of capture the flag. The Boy Scouts prepared a Dutch Oven beef stew over the campfire coals which was enjoyed by all for Saturday supper. After supper the highlight of the weekend was the Arrow of Light Ceremony where one Webelos Scout crossed over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. The ceremony was held in Camp Agawam’s beautiful amphitheater which is framed on three sides by massive natural rock formations with the Slippery Rock Creek flowing nearby. After the Cubs called to Akela, a flaming arrow flew from the trees to ignite the bonfire for the ceremony. What a memorable experience! Congratulations to our newest Boy Scout and Welcome to the Troop!

It's been a few years since the troop ordered our first Class B Shirts and they are getting small and tired. A new Class B Shirt design is ready for your review! Take a look at the four color schemes and let's get a majority vote on which color scheme is most popular. Once we agree on a color scheme we can get an order placed with quantities and sizes. Send me an email or post a comment!   Thanks! Mr. T

Camp Seph Mack Campout

Troop 482 arrived at Camp Seph Mack Friday evening set up camp and had a nice evening campfire. The night was a bit on the cool side but we were prepared and slept well. Saturday was a beautiful day which included kayaking on Yellow Creek Lake, a little fishing and a little hiking. The Iron Chef Cook-off was a huge success and the boys did a great job being inventive and we all shared two great entrees and desserts! We had one team win for the entree and the other team for the dessert.

We awoke Sunday morning to some rain, but as I was correctly reminded, we were fortunate that the rain stopped long enough for us to break camp and get on the road. Our new equipment trailer made the trip much easier and more effective. Food and trash can be easily stored out of reach of the critters during the night, not to mention the new found ability to transport almost everything and anything we need!
A beautiful day for kayaking on Yellow Creek Lake!
Mr. B shows us how skipping rocks is done!

Troop 482 Plans First Camp Outing of the 2011 Season!

Troop 482 will travel to Boy Scout Camp Seph Mack which is located on the shores of Yellow Creek Lake which is within Yellow Creek State Park, Indiana County, PA.

We have reserved the Arrowhead Campsite the weekend of April 29th and will arrive with our very cool new equipment trailer in tow! We look forward to Camping, Hiking, Fishing and Boating! An Iron Chef Cook-Off will be the highlight of Saturday's Supper plans!

The 2,981-acre Yellow Creek State Park is located in Indiana County along one of the first “highways” in the state, the Kittanning Path. This trail was used by the Delaware and Shawnee nations and by early settlers. Camp Seph Mack located at 1966 South Harmony Road Penn Runn, PA 15765 encompasses approximately 200 acres within the boundaries of Yellow Creek State Park and lies along the north shore with of almost 4,000 feet of lake frontage. Camp Seph Mack takes its name from the late J. Sephus Mack of Indiana, the patriarch of the family that originally donated much of this land for youth activities in the 1930’s. The 720-acre Yellow Creek Lake is a destination for boaters and anglers. The lake and park are an important rest stop for migrating birds. The park is named for Yellow and Little Yellow creeks, which create the lake. The creeks have lots of yellow clay in the banks and bottoms

Front and Rear Graphics Added!

Saturday morning the Troop 482 Scoutmasters applied vinyl die cut graphics to the front nose and rear barn doors. The nose got our indian shooting for the stars in brown Type II retro reflective vinyl and the rear doors got Pack and Troop logos in the reflective brown as well as the Law of the Pack and Boy Scout Law in Sapphire Blue vinyl. On the lower right hand door our sponsor and donors are recognized in Black vinyl lettering.

The interior wood floor received a coat of Thompson's Water Sealer as did the interior door surfaces. This should help the wood last and be easier to clean. We're PREPARED for our first campout of the season in a couple of weeks at Camp Seph Mack on Yellow Creek Lake in Indiana County, PA!

Equipment Trailer Gets Interior Makeover

Last Saturday 4/2/2011 we installed some shelving and tie downs for canopies and tables. A fire extinguisher was also installed inside the side door. Before and after shots are shown here.

Troop 482 Gets Long Awaited Equipment Trailer!

Our troop has been fundraising and saving for a much needed equipment trailer for a couple of years. With the help of donors and a joint effort with our Cub Pack, we have finally realized our dream! Our new 6x12 Cargo King Trailer purchased from Turner Tractor in Evans City arrived on March 4th, 2011.

We have been busy planning and installing interior shelving and storage as well as exterior graphics! This trailer should prove to be a useful tool for the Pack and the Troop for many years to come!
